Story Contracting has partnered with Network Rail to transport and install the ‘largest concrete bridge in the UK’.

The bridge, delivered via a £16.9 million deal with North Lanarkshire Council, will take the West Coast Main Line over a new dual carriageway between Motherwell and Ravenscraig.
Both aspects are the first stage of the £127.2 million Ravenscraig Access Infrastructure (RAI) project, supported by £61.9 million from the Glasgow City Region City Deal – and are part of ongoing regeneration work at the Ravenscraig former steelworks.
At around 6,000 tonnes, the bridge and support structure will be moved into position using self-propelled modular transporters.
Social value: full-time jobs for local people, apprenticeships with schools, work experience opportunities.
“The bridge is being built offline in a huge compound next to the railway but given the sheer scale and size of the structure, it’s becoming increasingly visible from several vantage points in the surrounding area,” said Jeremy Spence, Network Rail programme manager.
“Construction is supporting local jobs and apprenticeships and will minimise the impact of the line on the local area,” added Scottish Government Business Minister, Ivan McKee.
Works start Spring 2023.
