NML’s multi-million-pound Waterfront Transformation Project includes plans for Canning Dock, with the historic south dry dock from 1765 set to open to the public.

The project will enhance the wider public realm with leveled pathways, an open-air events space, and substantial improvements to interpretive elements on site.

Of the £15 million budget, £10 million is sourced from the Government’s Levelling Up Fund.

Construction on the designs, led by architects Asif Khan Studio and internationally renowned artist Theaster Gates, is scheduled to commence in autumn 2024.

Canning Dock’s history is deeply tied to Liverpool’s involvement in transatlantic slavery. The graving dock was utilised for cleaning and repairing ships, including those involved in trafficking enslaved people across the Atlantic for labor.
