Hanson takeover of Mick George cleared

editor

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has cleared the proposed takeover by Hanson UK of construction and demolition waste recycler Mick George Group

Credit: Hanson UK.

The materials giant announced the proposal in December 2022, saying the merger would bolster its circular materials capacity and complement its existing aggregates and ready-mixed concrete arm.

At the time, Mick George had an annual turnover of around £220 million and some 1,000 staff operating in East Anglia and the East Midlands.

Its other assets included four recycling facilities, eight waste transfer stations, 11 aggregates quarries, and 10 ready-mixed concrete plants.

The CMA had been looking into whether the merger would raise “competition concerns in certain markets” in the East of England and East Midlands that could result in “less choice and higher prices” for construction materials.

But a divestment deal with two companies, Brice Aggregates and PJ Thory, has allowed the arrangement to move forward.

They include the sale of five ready-mixed concrete businesses in Northampton, Market Harborough, Wellingborough, St Ives, and Ely, as well as quarries in Cambridgeshire and Northampton.

Whereas Mick George will sell its Ringstead Grange Quarry in Kettering, and another in Tottenhill, Norfolk.
