The River Blythe Viaduct received planning approval from Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council.

The 475-metre-long, low-lying structure, south of the new HS2 Interchange Station in Solihull, will cross River Blythe, a floodplain and Meriden Road near Hampton in Arden.

Meanwhile, the 225-metre-long Saltley Viaduct also received planning approval, from Birmingham City Council.

Northeast of Birmingham city centre, it will take the B4144 road over the HS2 line, the Birmingham and Warwick Junction Canal, the Birmingham and Derby rail line and River Rea.

It will provide access to the city centre and the wards of Nechells and Alum Rock.

Other local features include wider cycleways and additional lighting.

Approval of the two new viaducts means eight Key Design Elements (KDEs) on the West Midlands section of the route have now passed local planning control.

KDEs are structures on the HS2 project identified as being significant because of their size, proximity to communities, or location within sensitive areas.
