Green hydrogen developer, Meld Energy, is seeking funding from the UK’s Net Zero Hydrogen Fund to build a new plant near Hull.

The company will use the investment to carry out early development and design work for the project.

If the grant is approved, front end engineering design (FEED) will begin in November 2023, and construction shortly after.

Meld expects the plant to be operational by 2026.

Full scope

According to the plan, the plant will be located in Saltend Chemicals Park, which is already home to the CGGT and CHP Saltend Power Station.

The plant would have an initial capactivty of 100MW, with the potential to increase to more than 200MW.

Impact

The hydrogen produced by the plant would be used to provide energy on-site, helping Saltend to move away from carbon-intensive fuels.

The government’s Net Zero Hydrogen Fund looks to facilitate up to 10GW of low carbon hydrogen production capacity by 2030.

Meld expects to use the energy from the station to power transport and energy storage.

“This project can be online within three years and would deliver an immediate reduction in emissions once production commences,” said Chris Smith, CEO Meld Energy.
