Building materials supplier, Aggregate Industries (AI), has announced its acquisition of Telford-based firm Besblock

The precast materials supplier will add a range of sustainable building blocks to AI’s product range, and open up the company to housebuilders in the Midlands.

Besblock produces around 1.7 million building blocks per year at its two manufacturing sites in Telford, equating to approximately 250kT.

The firm produces the Star Performer block, a multi-purpose on-site solution that uses recycled aggregates and 24% less material than a solid block.

Besblock recently installed a new 1.65MW biomass boiler and renewable energy system, helping the firm move toward carbon neutrality once operational.

Aggregate’s sustainibility goals

Earlier this month, AI published its ‘Our Journey to Net Zero’ strategy, which looks to enforce several commitments to ensure the company achieves net zero by 2050.

One of these commitments include capturing and permanently storing CO2 from the business’ Cauldon cement plant by 2030.

AI is also part of the Peak Cluster project, which involves five major cement and lime plants working to cut more than 3 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions in the Peak District each year by 2030.

On the Besblock acquisition, Dragan Maksimovic, CEO of Aggregate Industries UK, said: “Besblock has invested heavily in sustainability in recent years and its market-leading product range has strong synergies with our own.

“We’re delighted to be able to enhance our products and capabilities with the acquisition of this progressive and market-leading business.”
