HS2 alerts subbies to multi-million-pound contracts

Multi-million pound contracts will soon be available for the first operational stage of HS2.

HS2 will soon be releasing its next wave of contracts for its first operational phase between Birmingham Curzon Street and Old Oak Common Station. 

Chosen contractors will mainly be tasked with civil engineering works, fit-outs, and manufacturing the fleet of HS2’s high-speed trains. 

HS2 will release the contracts this Summer, and will be hosting two briefing sessions on what works are available. 

The 10 July session will address the contract opportunities available with HS2’s stations and civil contractors, and the 11 July session will address contracts linked to the manufacture of HS2’s fleet of rolling stock.

Contract opportunities 

The contracts available in civils and stations will cover: 

  • Urban realm (earthworks, minor civils, roads, landscaping, trees). 
  • Station fit-out (structural steel, cladding, flooring, ceilings, painting, signage). 
  • Drainage works and associated materials (pre-crest concrete drainage and plastic drainage pipes). 
  • Highways works and associated ancillary packages (surfacing, kerbing / paving, road signs). 
  • External works (landscaping, civils, concrete). 
  • General procurement (materials, plants, consumables). 
  • Buildings & Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing (MEP). 

Furthermore, contracts relating to the rolling stock include: 

  • Exterior Coating.
  • Skirts (bogie covers, underframe, roof),
  • Fabrications,
  • Electrical Cables and Cabinets/Harnesses (high voltage cable, electrical cubicles)
  • Electricals (electrical cubicle).
  • Interior assemblies (handles, rails, walls, luggage racks, ceiling modules, decals).
  • Insulation, emergency equipment, hoses and pipework.

HS2 latest

This past week, HS2 has published five new contracts with undisclosed values: 

  • Epoxy resin flooring work for the Euston and Ruislip section, deadline on 31 May. 
  • Purchase and hire of lorry loader cranes (two contracts) for the Balfour-Beatty Vinci M6 loop compound in Birmingham, deadline on 25 May. 
  • BBV HS2 MWCC North – Delta Junction – TES-D0-1607 – PSV – Lateral platforms for stay storage, deadline on 23 May. 
  • BBV HS2 MWCC North – SL2b Supply and installation of traffic signals, deadline on 22 May. 

Earlier this month, Cementation Skanska and ULEMCo installed four 30m deep piles at a HS2 site in London using a hydrogen dual-fuel piling rig, reducing the use of traditional fuel by 36%. HS2 aims to use this technology more across all its sites. 

HS2 was approached for further information regarding the upcoming contracts and the timelines of future work.
