Phillips began his more than 40-year career as a civil engineer, then as a subcontractor’s site agent before joining BAM in 1989.

In 2008, he won the Construction Manager of the Year gold medal for his work on the £100 million St. Stephens development in Hull.

He also led the team that built Leeds Arena, as well as many other structures during his career.

Phillips was appointed regional director of BAM Construction in the North East in September 2015.

Posting on social media, Phillips wrote: “So, a fond goodbye to all the great people I have worked with and met along the way.

“Together we have created some great teams over the years, capable of delivering even the most demanding projects, not falling out by fostering a can-do attitude of project first, by solving its problems regardless of blame, and preserving that most precious commodity – time.”

He added: “Time for grandchildren, golf and holidays.”

In April, BAM Construct & Ventures UK reported increased turnover but a slip in profits in its latest financial update.

Revenue for the year ended 31 December 2022 rose to £982.3 million compared to £918.6 million in the previous recorded year, generating a pre-tax profit of £14.6 million which was down from £20.4 million in FY2021.
