Brian Long will join the business from Mirvac, one of Australia’s largest development and construction companies, where he has worked for two-and-a-half years in the role of group general manager for health, safety, and environment.

During his career, which includes 25 years’ experience spanning Europe, the US, and Australia, Long spent nearly 18 years at Lendlease and held the position of group head of sustainability and safety.

After that he worked at AECOM for a couple of years leading on safety and sustainability initiatives, before leaving for Woolworths Group.

Long will join the business in September and report directly to Wates chief executive officer, Eoghan O’Lionaird.

His hire comes amid plans for a major restructure at the contractor, and as executive managing director for construction, Paul Chandler announced his intention to retire at the end of the year.

Long said: “I have been very impressed with the genuine care Wates has for the wellbeing of its employees and partners, as well as its excellent track record in managing safety.

“I am eagerly looking forward to joining the company later this year to run its industry-leading work in this space.”

O’Lionaird added: “The health, safety, and wellbeing of our team is hugely important to us at Wates. I am delighted to welcome Brian to the Wates Group to lead this agenda, and to maintain our exceptionally high standards and drive our continued and long-standing commitment to the wellbeing of everyone who works for and with us.”
