Interview With The Founders – Brittany Harris and Jade Cohen

Construction Wave was incredibly happy to catch up with Brittany Harris and Jade Cohen who are the co-founders of Qualisflow. Qualisflow (or Qflow) enables you to make informed decisions on cost, carbon and quality and does this by collecting real-time materials and waste data at source for construction teams. How did you come up with the idea for Qflow?

We were both getting frustrated with the way things were working in design and construction through our previous jobs, and decided that we wanted to make a change ourselves, instead of waiting for the industry to evolve over time. The challenges of waste and carbon within construction were too important for us to not take action, and discussing ideas of data connectivity, transparency, one ‘failed’ social enterprise…(and a few beers later)…Qflow was born.

What can we hope to see from Qualis Flow in the future?

We should see a world where construction is completely circular, waste is eliminated from the process, and we see our built environment as a wealth of assets rather than targets for demolition. Qflow provides the key data source to enabling this, providing vital information to Digital Twins and virtual representations of the built world around us.

What do you think makes this company unique?

Our approach to problem-solving. We believe going ‘with the grain’ in construction can lead to more positive disruption and innovation, than creating a complete shift in workflows from the word go. We understand the problem space well, from our own experiences and those of our customers and partners, and through our single mission, to make construction more sustainable, we are truly focused on making that happen.

How has the company evolved over the last couple of years?

We have grown from a team of 2 to over 23, raised over $3.5M, and encountered multiple product pivots and evolutions. Moving from London-based projects to all over the UK, and with new regions on the horizon. As a SaaS product, we have focused on making materials and waste data accessible to project teams, and now we’re focused on optimising this value by making this available for the wider data landscape evolving in construction tech.

What is the most exciting thing happening in the construction industry right now?

There is a genuine drive towards Net Zero Carbon, and testing new approaches and methodologies to making this happen. To us, this is one of the most critical problems for us to help solve, and the appetite for adapting in this way is truly exciting.

What’s an interesting challenge you’ve faced while running the business?

Not forgetting to celebrate the wins! There are plenty of times when things don’t go your way, and lots of pressures with running a business in this current market, so making sure that we, as a team, can take the time to enjoy the highs, as well as the lows, is very important.
