McLaughlin & Harvey has started the main construction works for a new education hub in the West Midlands valued at £61 million.
The company has moved onto Phase Two of the new Wolverhampton City Learning Quarter facility, in the city centre, on behalf of Wolverhampton Council.
It marks the completion of enabling works for the new premises for use by City of Wolverhampton College, Adult Education Wolverhampton and Central Library.
It will pave the way for the college to move from its out-dated Paget Road site, which has been identified for new housing.
The contractor is now carrying out strip-out, demolition and groundworks, with piling works commencing to establish the foundations for the new building near the Old Hall Street and St George’s Parade area.
The scheme, which in part utilises the college’s existing Metro One site, is backed in part by £5 million from the Towns Fund, £22 million from the Levelling Up Fund and £22 million from the Department for Education (DfE).
“We are delighted to have reached this important milestone on the Wolverhampton City Learning Quarter project,” said Michael Kieran, McLaughlin & Harvey construction director. “We are currently undertaking demolition and strip-out works to the existing Metro One building, as well as ground preparation works to the East and West elevations. We are also commencing piling works.”
