Hector MacAulay will retire from Balfour Beatty at the end of the year having worked at the company for nearly 40 years, his most recent post being managing director – Scotland & Ireland.

MacAulay, who first joined the business as a graduate engineer, has also led regional civil engineering divisions during his long tenure at Balfour Beatty.

In 2020, he was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Honours list for services to construction and has been named by the King as Ambassador for Industrial Cadets in Scotland.

MacAulay’s retirement was announced publicly online by Balfour Beatty group chief executive, Leo Quinn, who congratulated him on his long and “purposeful” career.

“Today, Hector MacAulay MBE, has announced he will retire at the end of the year after four decades with Balfour Beatty,” Quinn announced.

“From graduate engineer to managing director of our Scotland business, Hector’s journey reflects the incredible, purposeful careers that make Balfour Beatty such a rewarding place to work—and his leadership leaves us in a strong position for continued success.”

During the first three months of the year, Balfour Beatty’s balance sheet showed the business had an average monthly net cash position of more than £1 billion

Given this strong performance, the Executive Board said it expects average net cash this year to be in the range of £900 million – £1 billion.

It is supported by a strong performance across the Construction, Support Services, and Infrastructure Investments divisions, as the company said it is also on track to complete a £125 million share buyback scheme by the end of the year, with around £46 million distributed to date.

Quinn continued: “Scotland is central to Balfour Beatty’s growth—energising the transition to net-zero, creating local jobs, and delivering infrastructure that endures and powers the future.

“A huge thank you to our colleagues across Scotland for your incredible dedication, skill and resilience.

“Together, you’re shaping a bright future for Balfour Beatty and the communities we serve.”
