A pre-construction services agreement is now in place between preferred bidder GRAHAM and Sefton Council, with construction of the 103,000 sq ft venue due to begin later this year.

Sheet piling works will begin shortly, following the recent demolition of the former Southport Theatre and Convention Centre building by Birmingham contractor DSM Demolition.

GRAHAM replaces Kier on site which was named preferred bidder in March 2023 under Sefton Council’s “town deal” with central government, before exiting the job in December later that year.

The new Marine Lake Events Centre will feature a 1,200-seat theatre and auditorium as well as an exhibition centre with production facilities, offices, retail concessions, café and restaurant.

“The Marine Lake Events Centre will not only transform Southport’s cultural offering but also act as a catalyst for economic growth in the region,” said Peter Reavey, regional director at GRAHAM.

“Our commitment to delivering high-quality construction projects that benefit communities aligns perfectly with the vision for MLEC, and we look forward to bringing this exciting development to life with Sefton Council.”

GRAHAM was recently appointed to deliver stage two of the £332 million Didcot and surrounding area major infrastructure (HIF1) scheme, with AECOM.

The procurement of GRAHAM for the Design and Construct projects was facilitated through the Crown Commercial Service’s Construction Works and Associated Services framework.

Before that the contractor completed a major upgrade of ‘one of the UK’s busiest junctions’ in Kent.
