Construction work to create the largest container port in the UK will start soon following approval of the £1 billion project.

Global logistics giant DP World is planning to expand its London Gateway container port from May, with two additional 400-metre-long berths and a second rail terminal.
It is estimated the major infrastructure project could take four years to complete.
When finished, the expanded port, part of Thames Freeport, will be able to accommodate six of the world’s largest container ships, served by Europe’s tallest quay cranes.
More than 1,000 construction jobs will be created during the expansion, as well as 400 permanent roles at the port itself.
The investment was first announced by DP World CEO and group chairman Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem in October last year.
He said: “This investment enhances London Gateway’s position at the heart of British trade, creating new capacity and new connections between the UK and the global economy.
“DP World has invested more than £5 billion in its UK operations, providing more than 5,500 jobs, and is proud to be supporting national economic growth by enabling businesses to thrive and increasing resilience in the supply chain.”
