editor

HS2 Limited has awarded a series of works contracts to three main contractors, spanning eight years and totalling £2 billion.

(HS2).

Strabag Rhomberg Sersa Joint Venture, Colas Rail, and Ferrovial Bam Joint Venture have each landed a role on HS2’s track systems framework.

The railway systems tranche of work includes the design, construction, commissioning and testing of track, overhead catenary, lineside M&E & tunnels, power, signalling and communications services.

The contract Lots are as follows:

  • Delivery contract for track – Urban (Lot 1): Lot 1 includes installation of all track infrastructure within the urban geographical area, such as stations, open route, bored tunnels and cut-and-cover tunnels.
  • Delivery contract for track – Open Route Central (Lot 2): Lot 2 includes installation of all track infrastructure within the central geographical area such as through open route, viaducts and cut-and-cover tunnels.
  • Delivery contract for track – Open Route North including Birmingham Spur (Lot 3): Lot 3 includes installation of all track infrastructure within the North geographical area, including through open route, viaducts and cut-and-cover tunnels.
  • Framework agreement for track delivery and other works (Lot 4): Lot 4 includes design and installation of all track infrastructure within the geographical area, as well as through open route.

HS2 has established a multi-supplier framework agreement alongside the delivery contracts for Lots 1, 2 and 3, to ensure the works are covered in the event of termination, contractor default, additional/optional works scope, delays and call-offs.

Balfour Beatty VINCI SYSTRA recently completed the foundations of the 850-metre-long underground station at Old Oak Common for HS2.

The station base, which will house six platforms for high-speed trains, has been constructed using 76,000 m³ of concrete and 17,000 tonnes of reinforced steel.

Construction began in April 2023 and saw 91 separate concrete pours to complete.
