The Corporate Officer of the House of Commons and the Corporate Officer of the House of Lords are acting jointly to invite tenders from suitable contractors.

The scope includes:

  • Removal, refurbishment or replacement, re-installation of cast-iron roof components
  • In-situ repairs to the supporting structure roof over the HoL Chamber and adjacent rooms

The consultant team has already been appointed for the job, who will use the traditional design.

The successful contractor will take on design responsibility for the temporary works, scaffold, logistics and mechanical and electrical work.

It is estimated to take place over three-and-a-half years.

The roof is more than 1,000 sqm, made up of more than 5,000 individual external cast-iron components.

The previous overhaul of the HoL Chamber roof was in 1996.

Remedial works were carried out on the roof in 2015 and a survey was undertaken in 2021 which highlighted the roof was continuing to deteriorate.

While temporary measures are in place, the roof now requires complete refurbishment.

Bids are due back by 5pm on 20 March 2025
