Kier has signed a major construction contract worth £683.8 million to deliver a “state-of-the-art” new prison in Scotland.

The construction company has been appointed by Scottish Government to build HMP Glasgow at Provanmill in the city, replacing Scotland’s largest prison, the 143-year-old HMP Barlinnie, which is no longer fit for purpose.
At peak construction there will be more than 1,000 workers on site, including dozens of new apprentices.
The total project cost is £998.4 million, almost double the previous estimate, with at least 50 per cent of the spend to benefit the local supply chain.
HMP Glasgow will have an inmate capacity of 1,344, adding 357 places to the overall prison estate once completed in 2028.
“It’s an honour to be awarded the contract to deliver this critical project,” said Rebecca Boundy, public sector director at Kier Construction.
“We will build a sustainable, state-of-the-art facility while ensuring that local communities, schools and charities directly benefit both now and in the future.”
Boundy added: “The project will provide new jobs, with at least 50 per cent of project spend committed to local supply chain partners, and also including provision for those who have directly experienced the justice system in the last six months.”
In July 2022, the Scottish Prison Service awarded the HMP Glasgow pre-construction services contract to the following strategic alliance:
- Kier – main contractor
- Holmes Miller – architect
- Curtins – civils and structures
- Pick Everard – architect
- Arup – mechanical and electrical engineering
- Medical Architecture – health planning and stakeholder engagement
- FES – MEP subcontractor
- PCE – precast concrete install and supply
- Careys – groundworks and civil engineering
In its latest trading update, Kier increased its order book and slashed monthly debt by 72 per cent, as the company announced a £20 million share buyback programme.
