Plans to construct ‘one of the largest AI data centres in the UK’ have been lodged.
QTS Data Centres has submitted an outline planning application to Northumberland County Council (NCC) for the construction of up to 10 buildings, spanning 540,000 sqm, at Cambois village, in south-east Northumberland.
Along with ancillary structures, substation and other associated works, the new facility will deliver 1,200 long-term construction jobs over several years as well as hundreds of permanent data centre roles when operational.
The state-of-the-art facility represents a significant inward investment of up to £10 billion, one of the largest in the UK, said NCC.
It will also enable the council to establish a £110 million fund which will drive long-term investment, including in growth and jobs schemes in the economic corridor along the new Northumberland Line which will open this year.
Council leader Glen Sanderson said: “I welcome this latest step in the development of what will be one of western Europe’s largest Artificial Intelligence data hub at Cambois.
“Subject to it meeting all the requirements of the planning committee, this scheme is a multi-billion vote of confidence in Northumberland’s future.”
The application will be considered by the council’s Strategic Planning Committee early in the new year.
