The clock is ticking for contractors to apply for a highways maintenance contract valued at £700 million.
Norfolk County Council is still welcoming bids to join its 14-year highways and infrastructure works term services contract, due to run to 1 October 2038 – but the window to apply closes in 27 days from today (15 November 2024).
Covering the entire county, the appointed contractors will provide a range of highways term maintenance and works as well as other infrastructure works and maintenance such as passenger transport and waste.
In addition, the council may require related professional services and contractor assistance in response to civil contingencies and other emergencies.
The contract may include the construction of highway-related buildings, passenger transport, and “active travel” schemes, such as buildings at bus interchanges.
It may also require construction of household waste recycling centres, waste transfer facilities, drainage systems, as well as coastal and flood defence work, and enabling works for developments undertaken by or on behalf of the council.
For the highways maintenance work, however, winning contractors will complete the following:
- Early contractor involvement
- Temporary works design
- Design of low-value permanent works
- Topographical and condition surveys
- Testing
- Small and intermediate-scale schemes such as new roundabouts, junction improvements, bus lanes and interchanges, footways, cycleways, and drainage improvement
- Structural maintenance schemes including footways, drainage, structures, and surfacing
- Small and intermediate-scale externally funded works
- Bridge and structure maintenance
- Surface dressing, rejuvenation and other surface treatments
- Surfacing
- Layered patching
- Slurry sealing
- Crack sealing
- Road marking
- Grass cutting and weed control
This is a one-time contract (no recurrence) and renewals are unavailable.
