The Cookstown-headquartered design and build contractor was appointed by developer Dominus to construct the 14-storey 65 Holborn Viaduct development.

The development, located at the junction of Holborn Viaduct and Snow Hill is targeted for students from London School of Economics, King’s College and Queen Mary University.

Design team: Stiff + Trevillion Architects and Jonathan Cook Landscape Architects.

The scheme aims to provide:

  • Mix studios, two-dios and cluster apartments
  • 35 per cent allocated as affordable accommodation
  • 64 rooms proposed as wheelchair accessible
  • New route connecting Holborn Viaduct and Snow Hill
  • Gateway to the new Museum of London at Smithfield Market
  • Free public access to a roof terrace offering views across the east of the city towards St Paul’s Cathedral
  • Mix of free cultural and affordable workspaces, in partnership with the Creative Land Trust (CLT)

The designs also aim to offer amenity space for students to meet, study, dine and exercise with an on-site cafe/bar, cinema room, music rooms, games area, gym and external roof terraces.

The scheme is targeting a BREEAM Excellent rating, and has been designed to utilise urban greening and water saving measures with the aim of reducing operational carbon emissions.

This is the 11th project that Dominus and McAleer & Rushe have undertaken together and the second PBSA scheme.

Earlier this year, Dominus hired McAleer & Rushe to deliver a major mixed-use scheme in the City of London, valued at more than £100 million, including a 700 unit PBSA.

That was followed by the expansion of the contractor senior management team with five new contracts directors along with year-on-year revenue increases coming from large contracts in the residential sector.

Mark Diamond, senior director at McAleer & Rushe said: “We are delighted to be entrusted as Construction Partner to deliver this landmark PBSA scheme by our long-standing client, Dominus.

“Designed to seamlessly blend into the community and provide a high-quality student living experience, the project is an excellent example of our shared commitment to leaving a lasting

positive impact which has been showcased throughout our decade-long partnership with Dominus.

Anupriya Rajpal, development director at Dominus said: “This appointment is an exciting milestone in the development of 65 Holborn Viaduct, paving the way for much-needed student accommodation in the City of London.”
