United Living has been appointed to deliver a major telecommunications infrastructure programme, designed to boost connectivity in the North and across the Scottish Borders.

United Living Connected (ULC) is partnering with engineering services provider, AWTG, to deploy a significant 5G network services contract across the Borderlands region.
The initiative, led by Connecting Cumbria on behalf of the Borderlands Partnership, falls under the Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal.
The new network will enhance connectivity across key tourist destinations within the Borderlands boundary, bringing together the five local authorities of Cumberland, Dumfries and Galloway, Northumberland, Scottish Borders, and Westmorland and Furness.
Core aims
- cross-border collaboration
- harness the power of 5G
- boost digital connectivity
- unlock economic potential
- more efficient services
- drive innovation
The project is currently underway, with the installation of site infrastructure scheduled for completion by February next year.
“We are thrilled to partner with AWTG to deliver comprehensive acquisition, design, construction, and integration services for this pivotal initiative,” said James Parker, private network lead (head of PMO) at ULC.
“Our work will drive positive outcomes for the local community and businesses at key sites throughout the Borderlands.”
Earlier this year, United Living appointed Mike Cobble as its new infrastructure director.
It follows recent growth by the company, including the acquisition of a majority stake in two businesses operating in the renewable energy market and specialist engineering firm AFECO before that.
Group revenues for the year ended 31 March 2023 increased 22 per cent to £534 million, compared to £437 million in the previous financial period.
