The construction industry has paid tribute to John Carey, the co-founder of Carey Group, who passed away over the weekend.
The Carey Family confirmed his passing on Sunday morning. He died aged 83.
John was one of the three founding partners of the Carey Group, alongside brothers Tom and Pat.
Emigrating to London from Ireland in 1969, the brothers started a groundworks contracting company called PJ Carey Plant Hire (Oval) Limited, which then became the Carey Group,
Careys is now one of the largest, private, family-owned construction companies in the UK.
The family shared in a statement: “John was a dearly loved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to many.
“He will be greatly missed by his loving family and close friends, whom we ask you to keep in your thoughts and prayers.
“His departure will leave a void for the family as John was a leader, figurehead and inspiration.
“We know from the many kind words already shared how well respected he was, and we look forward to sharing these with many of you in the coming weeks.”
Many in the construction industry have also paid tribute to the man, sharing their condolences and kind messages on social media.
A director at Admeliora Construction wrote: “My father worked for Careys for many years and retired with great fondness for the company and the management, our condolences to the family for your loss.”
Another company director posted: “Another pioneer of the Irish Family Construction Companies.
“These iconic founders are sadly dwindling but the legacy, admiration and aspirations to follow their example continues.”
One mourner wrote: “He was a gentleman and a man of great honour.”
A plant operator specialist at STATOM Group added: “Wishing you peace and comfort as you navigate through this time of sorrow.
“My deepest condolences to Careys group and your family.”
Another mourner said: “Really sad news. John was a really decent honourable person we could do with more like him.”
“So sad to hear of John passing have acting on the client side on a number of projects I found him to be a perfect gentleman,” said another company director.
A mourner also lamented: “The passing of a legend.”
While a former employee at Carey’s shared: “Proud to have been part of a great company built by John, Pat and Tom!”
The family has now asked for privacy at this time to allow them to come to terms with this loss.
