The works are a part of the wider £2 billion Transpennine Route Upgrade West Alliance (TRUWest) project.

It aims to transform journeys and bring more frequent, reliable and greener travel to the North.

As part of the TRUWest Alliance, Bam and Amey are working alongside Arup and Network Rail to deliver:

  • Upgrades to six stations
  • Significant earthworks
  • Improving facilities and accessibility
  • Constructing nine new bridges

A multi-span viaduct will also be constructed to allow tracks to be realigned, electrified, or increased in number to enable faster, more frequent electric trains.

Signalling work across 28 miles of route aims to increase reliability and reduce delays, and an increase in tracks from two to four between Huddersfield and Ravensthorpe will reduce journey times and congestion.

Overhead line equipment (OLE) will also be installed to support the reduction of the UK’s carbon footprint and improve air quality, while new tracks and drainage will be installed to increase line speeds and enhance service reliability.

TRUWest Alliance has so far run for the last seven years, with recent milestones such as the  completion of work along the route between Manchester Victoria and Stalybridge.

TRUWest covers 70-miles of Transpennine railway and serves 23 stations, 29 level crossings, 6 miles of tunnels and 3 miles of viaduct.

BAM rail director Nissar Mohammed said: “BAM’s appointment to the next phase of the TRUWest project builds on over seven years of successful collaboration with our alliance partners, delivering more reliable, more accessible and greener travel across the North of England.

Together with Network Rail and our alliance partners, we’ll continue to deliver engineering that will transform rail journeys and bring us one step closer to a net zero future for the UK.”

Amey CEO Andy Milner said: “This is fantastic news for Amey and our Alliance partners, recognising the positive impact our exceptional expertise and collaboration has delivered since 2017.

“We have delivered key outputs, such as Manchester to Stalybridge electrification, which has recently seen the first electric passenger trains; provided innovative solutions, such as the new Ravensthorpe Viaduct; as well as environmental and sustainable commitments to help achieve Network Rail’s net zero carbon targets.”

Peter Sollitt, TRU West Alliance managing director, said: “This is a major achievement and testament to the hard work and commitment from all members of the West Alliance.

We recognise the significance of the largest single contract by value that Network Rail has awarded and take that responsibility very seriously.”
