An east London council has taken to fortifying the construction sites in its town centre for fear of rioters causing damage.
Waltham Forest Council said teams are working to ensure buildings and construction sites are as ‘secure as possible’ following social media claims a protest is planned this evening.
It follows a series of violent gatherings, destruction of property including attacks on hotels sheltering asylum seekers, and assaults on police in towns and cities across the UK by gangs, seemingly in response to an anti-immigrant misinformation campaign following the killing of three girls in Southport.
Council deputy leader Clyde Loakes said: “We have seen the social media claims that a protest is planned in Walthamstow Town Centre tomorrow evening (7 August).
“We are working closely with the Metropolitan Police and others to monitor the situation and ensure we are prepared for any and all eventualities.
“The safety and wellbeing of our residents is always our top priority.
“We are taking a series of precautionary measures to provide reassurance to our residents, businesses and visitors.
“Extra CCTV and patrols will be in place, and we are ensuring buildings and construction sites in the immediate area are as secure as they can be.”
Cllr Loakes said residents should consider avoiding the area and let police and other agencies do their work, adding: “We are also reaching out to local businesses and faith organisations who might be targeted by these suggested ‘protestors’ to provide extra support and advice.”
