St William and RSHP received the council’s backing on the 23-acre site, following three years of design work and community engagement.

The proposals were backed by the London Borough of Newham’s Strategic Development Committee and supported by Historic England, the GLA, and the Newham Design Review Panel.

Designed in partnership with architecture firm RSHP, Berkley Group‘s St William aims to build more than 2,000 low carbon private and affordable homes.

It also promised new jobs, a community space, shops, cafes, offices, and a new park along the bank of the River Lea in walking distance from Bromley-by-Bow and West Ham Stations.

The Bromley-by-Bow gasholders date back to the 1870s and were part of East London’s industrial expansion.

The brownfield site houses the largest collection of Victorian gasholders, which was destroyed by a bomb in World War Two.

Berkley plans to restore and retain each of the structures, and transform the site into a mixed-use community, with more than 70 per cent of the land becoming public open space.

Next steps: A Section 106 legal agreement has to be finalised, before work can begin on site in 2025.

Dean Summers, managing director of St William, said: “I want to thank all of our partners and local residents who helped shape and support these exciting proposals.”

RSHP senior director, Graham Stirk, said: “RSHP are delighted to be involved in this challenging project.

The proposal will create a new neighbourhood for East London within a unique urban composition, sited within an extensive riverside park.
