The development will be built on the brownfield site of the former gasworks on East Dock Street.

Its scale meant the application was approved by a meeting of the full council following a pre-determination hearing at the planning committee.

The design team

The design team is led by Eden Project’s Experience Development team, with input from the wider Eden Project organisation.

Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, Nicoll Russell Studios, Expedition, Gross Max, AECOM, Art of Fact, Charcoal Blue, WSP, Atelier 10 and Buro Happold were also employed to get the project to its current stage.

The scheme will see the disused gasworks transformed into a new tourist attraction and educational facility.

It is set to bring new exhibits, food and beverage outlets and retail spaces to the area overlooking River Tay.

The decision comes following a period of community co-creation which saw the Eden Project team host events across Dundee with comments and feedback on the project being incorporated into the planning application.

The Eden Project estimate the development will create 200 direct jobs and support an additional 300 jobs in the supply chain and connected businesses, with the construction phase projected to bring an additional £27 million to the regional economy.

Dundee City Council leader, councillor John Alexander, said: “The Eden Project is a further example of the city’s ambitious regeneration drive.

“The project will help deliver hundreds of jobs, huge visitor numbers and tens of millions of pounds for the local economy.

“But it will also provide new educational opportunities and seek to build work on efforts within our communities, well beyond the site boundary.

Eden Project chief experience development officer, Blair Parkin, said: “This is a major milestone for the project and the culmination of years of hard work by the Eden Project team, our partners in Dundee and the community who have engaged with us so generously.

“We will allow ourselves a moment of celebration but we are well aware there is still lots to do to make Eden Project Dundee a reality.

“We will now concentrate on progressing the design, securing investment and continuing to deliver our community programmes in the city.”
