A major regeneration scheme costing £330 million has been revised.
Plans to bring the Newcastle Gateshead Quays scheme will see a £48 million hotel relocated due to “operational issues”, as previously reported in March by Insider Media.
A park will now be installed where the nine-storey hotel was planned, which has been moved to a site spanning Quarryfield Road and Hawks Road.
Retail and leisure space is also proposed, as well as restaurants, outdoor realm and performance space.
Gateshead Quays is a massive development on a more than 11-acre site, involving a new 12,500 capacity arena, exhibition and conference centre – The Sage, managed and operated by ASM Global.
McAlpine had initially been appointed to deliver the scheme in 2019, before being replaced by BAM two years later.
Hoardings and enabling works were started by BAM late in 2021, following its appointment by developer Ask:PATRIZIA, a joint venture (JV) between Ask Real Estate and PATRIZIA AG.
The scheme is expected to create around 2,000 jobs during construction.

The scheme had initially been due to complete in 2024, however its website now suggests 2025.
Gateshead Council will review the revised plans.
