VolkerFitzpatrick has started construction of a runway extension at Southampton Airport, valued at £17 million.

Airport leadership joined the firm in a ground breaking ceremony on 31 March, ahead of construction starting on 3 April.

Approved by Eastleigh Borough Council in April 2021, the 164m extension to the north end of the runway will aid the airport in attracting new airlines and to offer new routes.

In addition to expanding business and leisure capacity at the airport, it is hoped the extension will boost its viability.

Construction will take place at night, to avoid disruption to flight operations, and should be finished in August.

It is understood the works will provide 2,000 jobs.

“We are delighted to be given the opportunity to further strengthen our relationship with Southampton Airport,” said James Hindes, VolkerFitzpatrick managing director.

“VolkerFitzpatrick provides a wide range of airport infrastructure works and our experienced project team is looking forward to expanding and future-proofing the runway at Southampton Airport.”

VolkerFitzpatrick and Kier (VFK) recently oversaw the launch of the Luton DART (Direct Air-Rail Transit).

The project was delivered over four years on behalf of Luton Rising, the company that owns Luton Airport.
