Morgan Sindall Group will restore more than 300 hectares of severely damaged peatland in the north of England.
The firm is working with North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and Yorkshire Peat Partnership to support the Great North Bog peatland.
Morgan will restore and develop hundreds of hectares of heavily damaged blanket bog in the North Pennines AONB, UNESCO Global Geopark, the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and the surrounding uplands.
It is a landscape approach to restoration across nearly 7,000 km2 of upland peat which currently stores 400 million tonnes of carbon.
Eleven sites have already been identified, and the process of rewetting has begun.
“We recognise that healthy peatlands provide many benefits to society and are vital in helping tackle the climate and biodiversity crises,” said John Morgan, Morgan Sindall Group chief executive.
“The peatland restoration programmes of northern England have developed a vision to match the scale of this ecological challenge.
“This is a really exciting partnership for us because their vision aligns with one of our strategic aims to not only become net zero ourselves, but also to help others do the same.”
Last year Morgan Sindall announced a partnership with the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) to help them restore existing farmland into a haven for wildlife.
