The privately-owned commercial operation received the backing from HSBC, according to Business Live.

The scheme involves rebuilding a deep-water berth to accommodate 350m ocean liners.

A 74m extension to the solid quay face of the port’s primary cruise berth, the Outer Coaling Pier, is planned, according to Dorset Live.

  • Knights Brown (Managing Contractor)
  • Ramboll (Principal Designer)
  • Red 7 Marine (Piling works)
  • Van Den Herik (Dredging)

Local contractors Barrett Electrical, D&M Groundworks, ESG Trading, Pipefix and Quest Marine will also be involved in supporting the works.

Preparatory works are underway. When built, the expansion will see 380,000 tonnes of locally sourced infill material and 4,800 tonnes of steel used by contractors, local news outlets suggested.

The expansion will help Portland “keep pace” with increasing demands from its cruise and cargo customers.

Portland Port was acquired from the Royal Navy in 1996.
