The firm was appointed by West Sussex County Council to the new 900-pupil Bedelands Academy in Burgess Hill.

It will serve the new 3,500-home Brookleigh development nearby.

The council has committed nearly £40 million Capital funding to the new school, which will be Passivhaus standard. Around £18 million comes from Homes England.

Bedelands includes a 16-place Special Support Centre, and new sports facilities.

What is Passivhaus?

Passivhaus refers to builds created to rigorous energy efficient design standards, so they maintain an almost constant temperature.

“Carbon reduction is hugely important to our business, with the secondary element of the Bedelands Academy being the third Passivhaus school we will deliver in the South of England,” said Richard Poulter, managing director of Willmott Dixon in the South.

Construction is set to start later this year.
