Mid-Devon District Council approved Network Rail’s plans to replace two road bridges and reprofile a floodplain following frequent and prolonged flooding at Hele.
It forms part of a wider programme to reduce flooding on the main line through Somerset, Devon and Cornwall, meaning fewer closures and less disruption.
Scope of works
- Demolish the bridge at Station Road and replace it with a viaduct
- Build a new bridge to Devon Valley Mill
- Reprofile a floodplain
- Flood mitigation at Hele Square
Works will start in late spring and last about eight months.
“Since submitting our planning application, we have been carrying out further land and drainage surveys, refining the designs for the structures and putting a plan in place to make sure the project leaves a net gain for biodiversity,” said John Newland, Network Rail’s senior sponsor for the project.
“We appreciate that the work over several months will cause disruption for the people of Hele and Bradninch and we’ll do all we can to keep this to a minimum, including providing a suitable shuttle bus service during the road closure.”
