HS2 has won permission for the main control centre for the whole high-speed rail network.

Birmingham City Council approved the Washwood Heath depot near its city centre – the new maintenance facility and “operational heart” of HS2, valued at £275 million.
Washwood is a 30-hectare site where HS2 trains will be maintained, serviced and stored when not in use. It includes:
- Maintenance Building (250 staff)
- Network Integrated Control Centre (100+ staff)
- Cleaners and Drivers Building (200 staff)
- Stabling Yard
Design
- HS2’s Engineering Delivery Partner (EDP)
- Glenn Howells Architects
The scheme will create more than 550 local jobs.
Demolition and groundworks are underway.
