The firm was selected by Mulberry Commercial Development for the scheme at Mulberry Logistics Park, one of the largest of its kind in the UK.
The design and build contract included construction of one unit at 500,000 sq ft, and another at 550,000 sq ft, roughly equal to the size of seven football pitches.
Both units have a portal steel-frame superstructure with built-up cladding system, curtain walling, pre-cast concrete dock levellers and an ‘excellent’ BREEAM rating.
A new junction was also created.
Process
Due to location, timeframe, and the concrete volumes required, an onsite batching plant was installed providing ready-mixed concrete.
The firm also saved more than £7,500 overall, after trialling Solar Pod 30 electricity generators over nine weeks, to test financial and carbon savings against hire cost.
Social value
More than £6 million has been redirected to the local economy, including to schools, VolkerFitzpatrick estimates.
More than £4 million went towards local supply chain contractors, job opportunities and work placements, it added.
The firm also worked with HMP Hatfield and PSR Solutions to provide full-time paid work as labourer to an offender Released on Temporary License (ROTL).
Both units will be depots for Eddie Stobart.
